Nobodies ripping on your effort, which is a cool thing you feel strongly about. You got "ripped on" for attacking a longtime poster, by only me.

And, IMO, there is no greater form of conformity in this world than the Punk scene. It's loaded in hypocricy and is a sterile joke.

CBGB's is a landmark and should be preserved, but from what I hear, they need to rennovate it to pull it out of the dumps.

SJ it is not about 'the trouble with this generation etc' If anything it would suggest that 'this generation' have the capacity to adopt both a broader horizon and comprehend the reality of life rather than immediatly taking up a reactionary stance.
Like Buttz pointed out someone like Tom Verlaine or Christ Stein wil undoubtably buy the rights and open somewhere that maintains a the feel of what CBGBs stood for whilst bringing it into the 21st Century. Look at it this way. If CBGBs stays as it is, in 25 years it will be not in existence. It will be nothing more than an old myth that you and your mates reminise about . If it moves it will get a new lease of life. Born again and all that! If it was me, instead of trying to stop it closing I would launch a campaign to find a buyer. You may find yourself involved in opening the new one and then you would really have some influence in its history.
That way you might REALLY be saving CBGBs and not just putting a band-aid on a fatal stab wound.

I respect the legacy of CBGB's , but if it's a dump then they should renovate it or tear it down.
I try not to get too romantic about buildings. If Metro ( my favorite concert venue ) was a dirty, smelly health hazard, I wouldn't go there anymore. I do expect a certain level of comfort when I see a show.
I've "lived through the death" of Chicago Stadium, Comiskey Park, Lounge Ax, the original Exit on Wells Street, the Thirsty Whale, etc etc. Funny thing....ALL my memories of the fun I had at these places are alive and well in my head! CBGB's will live on in the minds of those who experienced it.

The original Medusa's also. Damn, soooo many good times there!!!

been there, played that, nice name, good history, hell hole of a place. yeah history and all but not really worth saving in it's present tense.

look at the limelight, hammerjacks (re-opened in a different location) or jc dobbs (re-opened as the pontiac) or what about coney island high, studio 1, l'amours or max's kansas city, the true original home of nyc punk. all gone. for as much as i admire your drive, times change.

there are a lot of clubs in nyc where bands can and do play regularly. i don't think the closing of cbgbs will have much affect on the music scene.
